The management affairs of the skill-based training centers in India’s Maharashtra state are presided by the Directorate of Vocational Education & Training (DVET) of the Government of Maharashtra. During the year 1984, the given responsibility was taken over by the DVET from the Union Government of India.
The Government, also, formed the National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT) for laying down the guidelines of the conduct of vocational education across Indian states, functioning at the national level. The State Council of Vocational Training (SCVT), operating at the state level, follows the NCVT’s guidelines. Thus, both the NCVT and SCVT jointly impart skill training.
The vocational courses are held at the government-funded Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and privately-owned Industrial Training Centers (ITCs). The ITIs and ITCs aim to serve the skilled labor needs of industries for propelling the nation’s growth.
Due to expansion taking place rapidly, there is shortage of skillful resources. Hence, the Central/State Government encourages individuals to pursue trade courses so they are technically-trained for working in varied industries.
Depending on whether the aspirants apply for the NCVT/SCVT courses, they can acquire the National Level Trade Certificates or State Level Trade Certificates, respectively; thereby, making them eligible for the national level or state-level opportunities, respectively.

The vocational courses are conducted in 4 semesters, with the students appearing for the exams of all the semesters.
